Russian Olive
€14.95
The Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) is a hardy, deciduous small tree or large shrub that typically grows to 6–10 metres tall, forming a dense, spreading canopy. It is a nitrogen-fixing plant, enriching the soil naturally and improving fertility for surrounding plants—a valuable trait in food forests, permaculture systems, and hedgerows. In late spring, it produces fragrant, silvery-yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By late summer, small, silvery-red to orange fruits develop, which are edible when fully ripe and can be used in preserves, jams, or eaten fresh.
Russian Olive thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor, sandy, and drought-prone conditions. It is exceptionally hardy, wind-tolerant, and performs well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate, particularly in exposed or challenging sites. Its dense canopy provides shelter and nesting sites for birds and wildlife, adding ecological value beyond soil improvement. Russian Olive is generally self-fertile and low-maintenance once established.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, enriched with compost or organic matter if available. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, but the tree is highly drought-tolerant once mature. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and to maintain shape and airflow. Harvest fruits in late summer when fully ripe and soft to the touch. Use fresh, in preserves, jams, or desserts, or leave some for wildlife. Over time, this nitrogen-fixing tree will continue to improve soil fertility while providing ecological and food forest benefits.
