Hawthorn Tree
€9.95
The Hawthorn Tree (Crataegus monogyna), also known as Whitethorn or May Tree, is a hardy, deciduous native tree that typically grows to 5–8 metres tall, forming a dense, thorny crown. In late spring, it produces masses of fragrant white blossoms, creating a striking display and providing an abundant source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. By autumn, bright red haws develop, persisting into winter and offering an important food source for birds and wildlife.
Hawthorn thrives in full sun or partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including heavier clays and moderately exposed sites. It is exceptionally well suited to Ireland’s cool temperate climate and is commonly found in native hedgerows across the country. Highly resilient and wind-tolerant once established, it plays a vital ecological role in supporting biodiversity. The young leaves, flowers, and berries have a long history of traditional use, while its dense, thorny growth makes it ideal for wildlife hedging and natural boundaries in gardens, farms, and food forests.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting to help establish a strong root system. Apply a mulch of compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure each spring to improve soil structure and retain moisture.
Hawthorn responds well to pruning and can be shaped as a small tree or maintained as a hedge. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain form and encourage dense growth. Once established, it is low-maintenance and tolerant of wind and varied soil conditions.
Berries (haws) ripen in autumn and can be harvested for preserves or left on the tree to provide valuable winter food for wildlife.
