Siberian Pea Shrub

The Siberian Pea Shrub (Caragana arborescens) is a hardy, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows to 3–5 metres tall, forming a dense, rounded canopy. In late spring to early summer, it produces fragrant yellow pea-like flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Following flowering, it develops small, edible legume pods containing high-protein seeds, which can be harvested for food or left for wildlife.

Siberian Pea Shrub thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor, sandy, or dry soils once established. It is exceptionally hardy and performs well in Ireland’s cool temperate climate. As a nitrogen-fixing plant, it enriches the soil, making it a valuable addition to permaculture systems, food forests, hedgerows, or wildlife gardens. The shrub is also wind-tolerant and can be used for shelterbelts or erosion control. Siberian Pea Shrub is self-fertile and low-maintenance, producing both flowers and seeds reliably.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, preferably enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, but once established, the shrub is drought-tolerant. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to support soil health and moisture retention.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage airflow. Harvest seeds in late summer when pods are fully mature and dry. The flowers and seeds support pollinators and wildlife, while the shrub itself improves soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
