Apple Tree - Katy

Price

€26.95

Apple Tree ‘Katy’ on M26 Rootstock (Malus domestica ‘Katy’) is a hardy, compact dessert apple tree that typically reaches around 2.5–3.5 m tall, depending on growing conditions and pruning. In spring, it produces beautiful pale pink to white blossom that is attractive to bees and other pollinators, followed by bright red apples that ripen early in the season. The fruit is crisp, juicy, sweet-tart, and aromatic, making it excellent for eating fresh, juicing, lunchboxes, fruit salads, baking, sauces, and preserves. ‘Katy’ is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, providing early-season fruit, attractive blossom, and reliable productivity for gardens, small orchards, food forests, edible borders, and permaculture plantings.

‘Katy’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and performs well in garden orchards, especially when planted in a sheltered position with good airflow. Grafted onto M26 rootstock, it forms a manageable semi-dwarf tree that is well suited to smaller gardens while still offering good fruiting potential. Its early harvest, bright red apples, pollinator-friendly blossom, and compact habit make it an excellent choice for resilient edible landscapes and productive home fruit growing.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Choose a sheltered position with good airflow, avoiding frost pockets and waterlogged ground. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young trees, and apply a mulch of compost, leaf mould, or woodchip each spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, feed the soil, and protect the root zone.

Prune in winter to remove dead, damaged, crossing, or overcrowded branches and to create an open, healthy shape that allows light and air into the canopy. M26 rootstock benefits from permanent staking, especially in exposed sites or while the tree is young, and fruit may need thinning in heavy cropping years to improve fruit size and reduce branch strain. Its early red apples, compact semi-dwarf size, spring blossom, and reliable cropping make it perfect for small orchards, kitchen gardens, food forests, edible borders, wildlife gardens, and permaculture systems seeking productive, manageable fruit trees.
