Dwarf Comfrey (Symphytum ibericum) is a low, spreading perennial in the borage family, offered here as a small-medium potted plant, valued as a hardworking mulch and support species. It forms clumps of broad, slightly hairy leaves 20–40cm tall, with clusters of creamy-white to pale yellow flowers in spring that are a magnet for bees and other pollinators. Like its comfrey relatives, it carries the old traditional association with 'knitbone' herbal remedies, its leaves once used externally in poultices for bruises and sprains, though it's grown here chiefly as a soil-building mulch rather than for medicinal use. The leaves can be cut through the season and used fresh as a nutrient-rich mulch around fruit trees and berries. Unlike sterile Bocking 14 comfrey, this species is not sterile and will spread gently by seed as well as root, so give it room to form a colony. Ideal for food forests, orchard understorey and wildlife gardens seeking a reliable soil-building groundcover.

Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive soil; it is adaptable once established. Water regularly while young plants settle in, especially during dry spells. Cut leaves back several times through the growing season and use fresh as a mulch or chop-and-drop feed around fruit trees and perennials. Trim off flowers before they set seed if you want to limit self-seeding, and choose a spot where its spread is welcome.
