Echinacea

Echinacea, commonly known as Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), is a hardy, perennial flowering plant that typically grows 60–120 cm tall, forming upright clumps of green, lance-shaped foliage. From midsummer to early autumn, it produces striking, daisy-like flowers with bright purple petals and prominent orange-brown central cones, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Echinacea is also valued for its medicinal properties, traditionally used to support the immune system and promote wellness.

Echinacea thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of soils once established. This low-maintenance perennial is ideal for pollinator gardens, wildflower meadows, permaculture systems, and borders, providing long-lasting colour and ecological benefits throughout the growing season.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly during the first few weeks to establish roots, and during dry spells thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage extended blooming and maintain a tidy appearance, or leave some to allow seed formation for wildlife. Divide clumps every 3–4 years to rejuvenate growth and maintain vigour. Echinacea’s long flowering period, ease of growth, and pollinator-friendly flowers make it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, herbal plantings, and permaculture systems.
