Echinacea

Price

€9.95

Echinacea, or Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), is offered here as a small-medium potted plant. An upright, clump-forming perennial reaching 60-120 cm, it produces bold, daisy-like flowers from midsummer to early autumn, with drooping bright purple petals surrounding a raised orange-brown cone. The blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and the seed heads that follow provide food for finches into winter. Echinacea is also a well-known herbal plant, its roots and flowers traditionally used in teas and tinctures valued for general wellness support. Easy-going once established and tolerant of a range of soils, it is a striking, long-flowering choice for pollinator borders, wildflower-style plantings and herb gardens across Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly while establishing and during dry spells; once settled, plants tolerate short periods of drought. Feed with a top-dressing of compost each spring. Deadhead to prolong flowering and maintain a tidy shape, or leave some flower heads through autumn to feed birds and shelter overwintering insects. Divide congested clumps every three to four years in spring to keep plants vigorous.
