Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is offered here as a small potted plant, an evergreen, perennial shrub in the mint family forming neat mounds of silvery-green foliage 60 to 90cm tall and wide. Its fragrant purple flower spikes appear through summer and are irresistible to bees and other pollinators. The flowers are edible in small amounts and popular in baking, herbal teas and homemade sachets, with a long tradition in herbal medicine as a calming tea taken before bed and valued in folk herbalism for easing headaches and encouraging restful sleep. Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a neutral to alkaline pH; good drainage is essential, especially over winter. Water while young plants establish, then only sparingly, as Lavender dislikes wet or heavy ground. Prune lightly after flowering to keep plants bushy and prevent them turning woody with age. Harvest flower spikes just as they open for the best fragrance and colour.
