Mint (Mentha spp.) is a vigorous, aromatic perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae), loved for its refreshing flavour, lush green foliage, and countless culinary and medicinal uses. Native to Europe and Asia, it thrives in Ireland’s cool, moist climate and spreads readily, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding herbs to grow.

Growing Instructions
Reaching 30–80 cm tall, mint produces square stems and fragrant leaves that release their signature scent at the slightest touch. In summer, it bears spikes of pale purple or white flowers rich in nectar, drawing bees, butterflies, and hoverflies to the garden. Its leaves can be harvested fresh or dried for teas, desserts, sauces, and savoury dishes alike.
Mint grows best in full sun to partial shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Because it spreads by underground runners, it’s often best contained in pots or planted in designated patches within the garden. Regular cutting encourages fresh growth and helps maintain a tidy, productive clump. A true garden essential, mint offers fragrance, flavour, and ecological value in abundance.
