Primrose
€6.95
Primrose (Primula vulgaris) is a hardy, low-growing perennial that typically reaches 10–20 cm tall, forming compact clumps of bright green leaves. In early spring, it produces charming, pale yellow flowers—sometimes tinged with pink or white—making it one of the first sources of nectar for bees and early pollinators. Entirely edible, both the leaves and flowers can be used in salads, teas, or as decorative garnishes. Primrose is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, providing bright, early-season colour in borders, woodland gardens, rockeries, and permaculture plantings while supporting biodiversity.
Primrose thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a variety of soil types, including humus-rich or slightly acidic soils. Its early flowers make it an excellent choice to brighten gardens at a time when most other plants are still dormant, attracting pollinators and signaling the start of spring.

Growing Instructions
Plant in partial shade or full shade in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young plants, and apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and nourish the soil.
Remove dead or damaged leaves and faded flowers to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further blooming. Primroses will naturalise over time, spreading gently to form colourful clumps. Their early blooms, edible leaves and flowers, and low-maintenance nature make them perfect for wildlife gardens, woodland edges, rockeries, or permaculture systems seeking year-round interest.
