Ajuga
€6.95
Ajuga (Ajuga reptans), also known as Bugleweed, is a low-growing, evergreen perennial that typically spreads to 20–30 cm tall, forming dense mats of glossy foliage. In spring to early summer, it produces spikes of blue, violet, or purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Ajuga is an excellent groundcover for suppressing weeds, stabilising soil, and adding colour and texture to borders, garden beds, and permaculture plantings.
Ajuga thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of soils, including clay or slightly dry conditions once established. Its dense growth habit provides shelter for beneficial insects and helps increase biodiversity in gardens and wildlife-friendly plantings.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first few weeks to establish roots, particularly in dry conditions. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould to retain soil moisture and feed the soil.
Ajuga spreads quickly via stolons; divide and transplant every 2–3 years to maintain healthy growth and prevent overcrowding. Minimal pruning is needed; trim flower spikes after blooming to tidy the plant and encourage denser foliage. This low-maintenance groundcover is ideal for erosion control, pollinator support, and creating living carpets in permaculture gardens or borders.
