Snow in Summer
€6.95
Cerastium tomentosum, commonly known as Snow-in-Summer, is a hardy, low-growing evergreen perennial groundcover that typically reaches 10–20 cm tall, forming dense mats of soft, silvery-grey foliage. In late spring to early summer, it produces masses of small white star-shaped flowers that create a bright, snow-like display and attract bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects. Its spreading habit, drought tolerance, and ornamental silver leaves make it especially useful for edging paths, softening borders, filling gaps, covering banks, growing between stones, and adding contrast to rock gardens, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, dry gardens, and permaculture plantings.
Cerastium tomentosum thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, performing especially well in dry, poor, sandy, or stony ground where many other plants may struggle. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate, provided it is not left sitting in heavy, waterlogged soil during winter. Its evergreen silver foliage, long-lasting flower display, pollinator value, and ability to create a living groundcover make it an excellent choice for low-maintenance, biodiversity-friendly gardens and regenerative planting systems where soil coverage and ornamental value are important.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, spacing plants apart to allow them to spread and form a dense carpet over time. Avoid rich, heavy, or waterlogged ground, as too much moisture or fertility can make the plant less compact and more prone to decline. Water regularly while young plants are establishing, but reduce watering once settled, as Cerastium tomentosum prefers drier conditions and requires very little feeding.
Trim back lightly after flowering to keep the plant neat, encourage fresh silver growth, and prevent it from spreading further than desired. Divide clumps every few years if they become too dense or woody in the centre. Its soft evergreen foliage, white pollinator-friendly flowers, drought tolerance, spreading groundcover habit, and low-maintenance nature make it perfect for rock gardens, path edges, banks, dry borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and permaculture systems seeking attractive living groundcover and year-round contrast.
