Native Irish Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) is a hardy deciduous climbing shrub that can reach 3–6 m tall when given suitable support, weaving naturally through hedges, trees, fences, and trellises. From summer into early autumn, it produces beautifully scented tubular flowers in shades of cream, yellow, pink, and red, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators. Later in the season, the flowers are followed by red berries that provide food for birds, though they are not edible for humans. Native Irish Honeysuckle is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, providing fragrance, wildlife value, vertical structure, and native biodiversity support in hedgerows, woodland edges, wildlife gardens, forest gardens, and permaculture plantings.

Native Irish Honeysuckle thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and is especially valuable as a native climber for supporting local wildlife, including pollinating insects and berry-eating birds. Its fragrant flowers, wildlife-friendly berries, climbing habit, and suitability for naturalistic planting make it an excellent choice for regenerative gardens, edible landscapes, native hedging, and biodiversity-focused permaculture systems.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Provide a trellis, fence, arch, hedge, or living support such as a tree or shrub for the plant to climb through naturally. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young plants, and apply a mulch of compost, leaf mould, or woodchip each spring to retain moisture, feed the soil, and protect the roots.

Prune lightly after flowering to remove dead, damaged, or tangled growth and to keep the plant within its desired space. Allow some berries to develop for birds and wildlife, but avoid eating them as they are not suitable for human consumption. Its scented flowers, native wildlife value, bird-friendly berries, and graceful climbing habit make it perfect for hedgerows, woodland edges, wildlife gardens, forest gardens, native-style plantings, and permaculture systems seeking beauty, biodiversity, and habitat creation.
