Aubretia
€6.95
Aubretia (Aubrieta deltoidea) is a hardy, low-growing evergreen perennial that typically reaches 10–15 cm tall, forming spreading mats of small grey-green leaves. In spring, it becomes covered in masses of purple, violet, pink, or blue flowers, creating a bright carpet of colour that is highly attractive to bees and other early pollinators. Though mainly grown as an ornamental rather than an edible plant, Aubretia is excellent for supporting biodiversity and bringing early-season beauty to the garden. It is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, providing vibrant spring colour in rockeries, walls, path edges, containers, wildlife gardens, and permaculture plantings.
Aubretia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, tolerating poor, sandy, rocky, or lime-rich conditions once established. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and is particularly useful for dry, free-draining sites where a tough, spreading groundcover is needed. Its early flowers, evergreen foliage, drought tolerance, and ability to soften walls and edges make it a valuable choice for pollinator-friendly gardens, rock gardens, and low-maintenance regenerative plantings.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, adding compost if the ground is very poor but avoiding overly rich or waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during dry spells while young plants are establishing, especially when planted in walls, containers, or shallow soil, and apply a light mulch of compost or gravel to protect the soil without smothering the crown.
Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants compact, encourage fresh growth, and prevent the centre becoming woody over time. Once established, Aubretia is drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance, spreading gently to form colourful mats. Its early pollinator flowers, evergreen foliage, trailing habit, and low-maintenance nature make it perfect for rockeries, stone walls, path edges, containers, wildlife gardens, and permaculture systems seeking beauty, groundcover, and spring nectar.
