Common Knapweed
€6.95
Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) is a hardy, perennial wildflower that typically grows to 30–90 cm tall, forming a dense clump of narrow, lance-shaped leaves. From late spring to early autumn, it produces striking purple flower heads that attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other pollinators, making it a vital plant for biodiversity and wildlife-friendly gardens. Its long flowering period provides a continuous nectar source throughout the warmer months.
Common Knapweed thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, although it is tolerant of poorer soils. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and is ideal for meadows, pollinator strips, wildflower gardens, and permaculture plantings. This low-maintenance plant supports ecological diversity, contributes to soil health, and provides food and habitat for beneficial insects and wildlife.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, ideally enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first few weeks to help establish roots, but once established, the plant is drought-tolerant. Apply a light mulch to retain soil moisture during establishment.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage extended blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding if desired. Allow some flowers to go to seed to support wildlife and increase natural meadow coverage. Common Knapweed is low-maintenance and will return year after year, enhancing pollinator activity and biodiversity in your garden or food forest.
