Calendula

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as Pot Marigold, is a hardy annual or short-lived perennial edible flower that typically reaches 30–60 cm tall, forming bushy plants with soft green leaves and bright daisy-like flowers in shades of orange, gold, and yellow. It flowers generously from late spring through autumn, providing colour, edible petals, and a valuable nectar source for bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects. The petals are edible and can be used fresh or dried in salads, soups, rice dishes, herbal teas, butters, baking, and as a natural golden colouring for food. Calendula is easy to grow and is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels, bringing long-lasting colour, pollinator support, and edible flowers to vegetable gardens, herb gardens, borders, containers, and permaculture plantings.

Calendula thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and will often self-seed gently, returning year after year where conditions suit it. Its long flowering season, edible petals, pest-confusing qualities, and ability to attract beneficial insects make it an excellent companion plant for edible gardens, wildlife-friendly spaces, and regenerative growing systems.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained, moderately fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young plants or when growing in containers, and apply a light mulch of compost or leaf mould to retain moisture and support healthy growth.

Pick flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming, and remove faded flower heads if you want to prolong flowering or reduce self-seeding. Allow some flowers to set seed if you would like Calendula to naturalise and return in future seasons. Its edible golden petals, long flowering period, pollinator value, and easy-care nature make it perfect for kitchen gardens, herb beds, wildlife gardens, containers, companion planting, and permaculture systems seeking beauty, biodiversity, and useful edible flowers.
