Flowering Currant

Price

€14.95

Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum) is offered here as a young plant — sold bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. A deciduous shrub in the Grossulariaceae family growing to around 2 m tall and wide, it produces clusters of fragrant, bright pink to red flowers in early spring that provide valuable early nectar for bees and other pollinators, well before most other shrubs are in bloom. The berries that follow are technically edible but are grown chiefly for ornamental impact rather than eating. Its bold spring colour and easy-going nature make it a garden favourite. A cheerful, low-maintenance choice for Irish and UK wildlife gardens, hedges, and mixed borders.

Growing Instructions

Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Water while establishing, then only during extended dry spells once settled. Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage strong new growth for next year's blooms, removing any old or congested stems. Low-maintenance once established, it suits informal hedging as well as specimen planting in mixed borders and wildlife gardens.
