The Cherry Plum Tree (Prunus cerasifera) is a small, deciduous fruit tree or large shrub that typically grows to 4–6 metres tall, forming a rounded, spreading canopy. In early spring, it produces fragrant white to pale pink blossoms before the leaves appear, providing one of the earliest sources of nectar for bees and pollinators. By mid to late summer, small, oval-shaped fruits ripen to red or purple, offering a sweet-tart flavour ideal for fresh eating, jams, and preserves.

Cherry Plum thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is hardy and well suited to Ireland’s cool temperate climate, tolerating a variety of soils once established. Its flowers attract pollinators, while the fruits provide food for wildlife, making it a valuable addition to food forests, hedgerows, or wildlife-friendly gardens. Cherry Plum is partially self-fertile but will produce a better crop if planted near another compatible plum or cherry plum variety.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting and during dry spells to encourage strong root development. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Prune in late winter to remove dead, crossing, or overcrowded branches and to maintain an open canopy for airflow and fruiting. Harvest fruits in mid to late summer when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch. Use fresh, in jams, preserves, or desserts, or leave some fruits on the tree to feed wildlife.
