Cherry blossom tree

The Cherry Blossom Tree (Prunus serrulata) is a stunning, deciduous ornamental tree that typically grows to 5–8 metres tall, forming a graceful, spreading canopy. In spring, it produces an abundance of delicate pink or white blossoms, creating a spectacular seasonal display and providing an early source of nectar for bees and other pollinators. Its fresh green foliage follows the blossom and often turns shades of yellow, orange, or bronze in autumn, adding further seasonal interest.

Cherry Blossom thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and performs best in sheltered positions protected from strong winds. While primarily grown for its ornamental beauty rather than fruit production, it is a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens, avenues, and landscape plantings, enhancing biodiversity and seasonal interest.

⚠️ Note: Ornamental cherry varieties are not grown for edible fruit. While small fruits may form, they are generally not suitable for consumption.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting to establish a strong root system, especially during dry spells. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and improve soil health.

Minimal pruning is required; remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late summer to reduce the risk of disease. Avoid heavy winter pruning. Cherry Blossom trees are low-maintenance once established and will reward you each spring with a spectacular floral display that supports pollinators and enhances garden biodiversity.
