Sumac (Rhus typhina) is offered here as a bare-root tree from November to March, and as a potted tree the rest of the year. A deciduous shrub or small tree in the Anacardiaceae family, related to cashew and mango, it can grow up to 10 m and produces dense, upright clusters of bright red berries. The berries are edible, eaten fresh or dried and ground into a tangy, lemony seasoning widely used in Middle Eastern cooking. Sumac spreads vigorously by suckering and seed, so it benefits from regular control, but this same vigour makes it useful for erosion control and biomass. A striking, productive choice for Irish and UK food forests and permaculture plantings.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Water well while establishing; once rooted in, it needs little further attention. Cut back suckers regularly to keep growth within bounds, and remove dead or damaged wood in late winter. Harvest berry clusters in late summer once deep red, drying and grinding them into a tangy spice, or leave some for wildlife.
