Guelder Rose
€9.95
The Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) is a hardy, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows 3–5 metres tall, forming a rounded, spreading canopy. In late spring, it produces striking clusters of creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By late summer to autumn, these flowers develop into bright red berries, providing an important food source for birds and wildlife. Its attractive foliage also turns deep red in autumn, adding seasonal interest to gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture plantings.
Guelder Rose thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of soils once established. This shrub is ideal for wildlife gardens, hedgerows, and food forests, supporting biodiversity while offering ornamental and ecological value.
⚠️ Warning: The berries and other parts of the plant are mildly toxic to humans if eaten raw, potentially causing nausea or vomiting. They should be used for ornamental purposes, for wildlife, or cooked/prepared properly if intended for consumption.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, and during dry spells thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, maintaining airflow and an open canopy. The berries are primarily for wildlife; harvest only if intending to cook or process them safely. Guelder Rose is low-maintenance and will return year after year, providing flowers, berries, and shelter for pollinators and wildlife.
