Fig tree - Violette Dauphine

Price

€19.95

The Violette Dauphine Fig (Ficus carica ‘Violette Dauphine’) is a deciduous fruit tree that typically grows 3–5 metres tall, forming a spreading canopy with large, deeply lobed leaves. It produces large, sweet, violet-purple figs with rich red flesh, usually ripening from late summer into early autumn. This variety is prized for its flavour, generous fruit size, and ornamental value, making it ideal for eating fresh, drying, or using in preserves. Its broad foliage also provides shelter for beneficial insects and wildlife.

Violette Dauphine Fig thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It can be grown in Ireland’s cool temperate climate when planted in a warm, sheltered position, especially against a south-facing wall, in a courtyard, or in a large container. The tree is self-fertile but benefits from good airflow, protection from cold winds, and regular watering during dry periods to support healthy growth and fruit production.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system and during dry spells thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and to maintain an open, airy shape. Harvest figs from late summer to early autumn when fully coloured, slightly soft, and sweet. Fig trees are low-maintenance, long-lived, and will provide abundant fruit for many years with proper care.
