Cobnut Tree

Price

€19.95

Cobnut (Corylus avellana 'Kentish Cob') is a cultivated hazel variety, offered here as a young, well-rooted tree — supplied bare-root from November to March and as a potted tree the rest of the year. A fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree reaching 4 to 6 m, it produces yellow catkins in early spring, an early pollen source for bees, followed by large, sweet, buttery nuts that ripen from late summer into early autumn inside husks that turn from green to gold. Selected for dependable yields and rich flavour, it has proven well suited to Ireland's climate. Both ornamental and productive, it's an excellent choice for edible hedgerows, small orchards and food forests looking for reliable homegrown nuts.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; Cobnut tolerates a wide range of conditions once established. Water well during the first growing season and mulch each spring with compost to retain moisture and feed the soil. Prune or coppice regularly to maintain vigour and encourage good nut production, removing crowded or crossing stems in winter. Harvest nuts from late summer into early autumn once husks turn from green to gold.
