White Currant

Price

€14.95

Whitecurrant (Ribes rubrum 'White Pearl') is offered here as a young plant, a compact deciduous shrub in the Grossulariaceae family growing to around 1.5 m tall and wide. A cultivar of redcurrant, it produces clusters of translucent, pale yellow to white berries in summer with a sweet, delicate flavour, ideal for fresh eating, jams, and desserts. Its open branching habit suits informal planting or training as a cordon, and ripening fruit draws garden birds. A hardy, dependable choice for Irish and UK fruit gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture designs seeking something a little different from the usual currant.

Growing Instructions

Plant bare-root from November to March, or from a pot the rest of the year, in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Water regularly and mulch to support healthy growth and fruiting. Prune annually during dormancy, removing old wood to promote vigorous new shoots and good airflow. Well suited to fruit gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture plantings, with berries ready to pick from mid to late summer.
