Aronia Berry (Aronia melanocarpa), also known as Black Chokeberry, is a hardy, deciduous shrub offered here as a young plant, sold bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. It forms a dense, rounded bush 1.5 to 2.5 m tall, with clusters of small white flowers in late spring that attract bees and butterflies, followed by glossy black berries by early autumn. The berries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, and are excellent for juices, jams, syrups, and baking. Fully hardy and tolerant of clay and sandy soils alike, it thrives in Ireland's cool climate and gives good shelter to birds. Plant several together for a heavier crop in food forests, hedgerows, and permaculture gardens.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water well during the first year and through dry spells afterwards. Mulch each spring with compost or leaf mould to retain moisture and improve soil health. Little pruning is needed beyond removing dead or damaged branches in late winter. Harvest berries from late summer to early autumn once fully black and firm, and use fresh, in juices and jams, or leave some for the birds.
