Silver Buffalo Berry (Shepherdia argentea) is a hardy, deciduous shrub offered here as a seed-grown young plant, sold bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. It grows 2 to 4 m tall and wide, with striking silvery-grey foliage and bright red berries that have a tart, citrus-like flavour, traditionally used in jams, jellies, and sauces. As a nitrogen-fixing species, it enriches the soil around it, making it a valuable companion in a fruit tree guild. Note that this is a dioecious plant, so both male and female specimens are needed for a reliable fruit set. Exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant, it performs well in poor or exposed sites, making it ideal for Irish hedges, windbreaks, and wildlife gardens.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; it adapts readily to poor, dry, or exposed conditions once established. Water during the first year to help roots establish, though mature plants need little extra watering. Prune to shape if desired, which also encourages bushier growth. As a nitrogen fixer, it works well planted alongside fruit trees or in a permaculture guild. Harvest berries once fully red and slightly soft, and use in jams, jellies, or sauces for their sharp, citrus-like flavour.
