Gooseberry

Price

€14.95

Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) is a deciduous shrub offered here as a young plant, sold bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. It forms a compact bush 1.2 to 1.5 m tall and wide, producing tart, round berries that ripen from green through to red or purple depending on variety. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, the fruit is a classic choice for jams, pies, and desserts, or simply eaten fresh once fully ripe. It tolerates a wide range of soils, though good air circulation helps keep mildew at bay. A dependable, old-fashioned favourite for Irish fruit gardens, hedgerows, and permaculture plots.

Growing Instructions

Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil, allowing good air circulation around the bush to prevent mildew. Water consistently, particularly during dry spells and while fruit is swelling. Mulch each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil. Prune annually during dormancy, removing old or crossing wood and opening up the centre of the bush. Pick berries as they ripen from green through to red or purple, depending on variety, for the best flavour.
