Loganberry - Thornless

Price

€14.95

The Thornless Loganberry (Rubus × loganobaccus) is a vigorous, deciduous bramble that typically grows to 1.5–2 metres tall with long, trailing canes. This thornless variety produces large, juicy, deep red berries from midsummer to early autumn, combining the flavours of raspberry and blackberry. The fruit is excellent for eating fresh, making jams, jellies, pies, or freezing for later use. Its thornless canes make harvesting easier and more enjoyable compared to traditional brambles.

Thornless Loganberry thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerant of a range of garden soils once established. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the dense foliage provides shelter for wildlife. This bramble is ideal for permaculture gardens, hedgerows, and productive backyard plantings.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart and provide support with a trellis, fence, or wire system to train the canes. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, and during dry periods thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Prune in late winter or early spring to remove old, woody canes and encourage new growth. Harvest berries from midsummer to early autumn when fully coloured and firm yet juicy. Regular pruning and support will maintain healthy plants and maximise fruit production for years to come.
