Blackberry - Thornless
€14.95
The Thornless Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus, cultivated variety) is a vigorous, deciduous bramble that typically grows to 1.5–2 metres tall, producing long, arching, thornless canes. This variety produces large, sweet, black berries from midsummer to early autumn, perfect for fresh eating, jams, pies, desserts, or freezing for later use. Its thornless canes make harvesting easier and safer than traditional wild blackberries.
Thornless Blackberry thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of soils once established. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the dense foliage provides shelter for birds and small wildlife. This cultivated bramble is ideal for permaculture gardens, food forests, backyard orchards, and hedgerows.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 1–1.5 metres apart. Provide support with a trellis, fence, or wire system to train the canes and maximise fruit production. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, and during dry periods thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove old, woody canes and encourage vigorous new growth. Harvest blackberries from midsummer to early autumn when fully black, plump, and slightly soft. Regular pruning and support will maintain healthy plants and ensure abundant crops year after year.
