Blackcap Raspberry 'Black Jewel' (Rubus occidentalis) is a hardy, thorny, fast-growing deciduous shrub offered here as a young plant, sold bare-root from November to March and as a potted plant the rest of the year. It grows 1.5 to 2 m tall and wide, producing sweet, black-purple berries in late summer that are prized for their rich flavour and high antioxidant content, excellent fresh, in jams, or desserts. A vigorous, long-lived plant, it can go on cropping reliably for up to 10 years with good care. Its canes carry thorns, so a little care is needed at harvest and pruning time. Well suited to Irish food forests, edible hedges, and productive backyard gardens.

Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Water well while establishing and during dry spells, and mulch regularly to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune annually during dormancy, cutting out old canes at the base to make way for vigorous new growth and a strong fruiting crop. Wear gloves when handling, as the canes carry thorns. Pick berries in late summer as soon as they turn fully black-purple and pull away easily.
