Alpine Strawberry Plant (Yellow)

Price

€5.95

Alpine Strawberry 'Yellow Wonder' (Fragaria vesca) is a low-growing perennial offered here as a potted young plant, reaching just 10 to 20 cm and forming neat, non-spreading clumps. Unlike the more familiar red alpine strawberry, this variety produces small, pale yellow, intensely fragrant fruit with the same sweet, delicate flavour, and because birds tend to overlook the pale colour, netting usually isn't needed to protect the crop. It flowers over a long season, offering a steady trickle of fruit alongside genuine pollinator interest. Being clump-forming rather than a runner-producer, it stays tidy with very little upkeep. A charming, low-maintenance choice for Irish cottage gardens, edible borders, and mass planting as ground cover under fruit trees.

Growing Instructions

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly, especially in dry spells, and mulch to retain moisture and keep fruit clean. Alpine strawberries grow in neat clumps rather than spreading by runners, so little maintenance is needed beyond dividing congested clumps every few years to keep them productive. Pick fruit as soon as it turns fully pale yellow and softens, when the flavour and fragrance are at their best.
