Alpine Strawberry (Fragaria vesca) is a low-growing perennial offered here as a potted young plant, reaching just 10 to 20 cm and forming neat, non-spreading clumps. It produces small, intensely flavoured red berries with a delicate wild-strawberry aroma quite different from shop-bought fruit. Unlike common strawberries, alpine types don't send out runners, so there's no spread to control, making them ideal for edging, containers, or shadier corners of the garden. Flowers appear over a long season, giving pollinators a steady source of nectar alongside a gentle trickle of fruit. A charming, low-maintenance choice for Irish cottage gardens, edible borders, and mass planting as ground cover beneath fruit trees.

Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly and mulch to retain moisture, and protect ripening fruit from slugs and birds. Because alpine strawberries grow in tidy clumps rather than spreading by runners, they need very little maintenance beyond an occasional tidy-up. Divide congested clumps every few years to keep plants vigorous. Pick berries as soon as they turn fully red and pull away easily, for the best flavour and fragrance.
