Lemon Balm

Price

€6.95

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is offered here as a small potted plant, a bushy perennial in the mint family with bright green, lemon-scented foliage reaching up to 80cm tall, topped with small white flowers in summer that are popular with bees. The fresh, citrusy leaves are traditionally used in herbal teas and are a pleasant addition to salads, cordials and desserts, valued for their fragrance and general sense of wellbeing. Vigorous and easy to grow, Lemon Balm spreads readily by seed and root, so it suits informal plantings well. A useful, uplifting herb for kitchen gardens, pollinator borders and ground cover in Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions

Grow in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; Lemon Balm is adaptable and will thrive in most garden conditions. Water regularly while establishing, then as needed through dry spells. It self-seeds freely and spreads by root, so cut back after flowering to prevent it becoming invasive, or grow in a container to keep it contained. Harvest leaves fresh throughout the growing season for the best flavour.
