Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is a deciduous, fruit-bearing shrub offered here as small, young plants, sold bare-root from November to March and as potted plants the rest of the year. It typically reaches 1 to 2 m, producing clusters of white to pink flowers in spring followed by sweet, antioxidant-rich blue-purple berries in summer; many varieties also give striking red foliage in autumn. Growing two or more varieties together improves pollination and yields a heavier crop. Given the right acidic soil, blueberries are reliably productive and long-lived. An excellent choice for Irish forest gardens, edible landscaping, and container growing on patios where soil pH can be controlled.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in acidic, well-drained soil high in organic matter (pH 4.5 to 5.5 is ideal), using ericaceous compost if growing in containers. Mulch with pine needles or bark to help maintain acidity, and water regularly, especially while fruit is forming. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly in late winter, removing old or crossing wood to keep an open shape. Plant more than one variety nearby to improve pollination and fruit set.
