Elder (Sambucus nigra), also known as Black Elder, is a fast-growing deciduous shrub or small tree, offered here as a young, well-rooted plant — supplied bare-root from November to March and as a potted tree the rest of the year. It reaches up to 6 m tall and wide, opening broad heads of fragrant white flowers in early summer, followed by clusters of dark purple-black berries in late summer. Both are used in the kitchen — flowers for cordial and fritters, berries cooked into syrups, jams and wine, best always cooked before eating — and both have a long history of traditional herbal use too. Tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions, it's a fast, forgiving plant that also offers good cover for wildlife. A useful addition to wildlife gardens, hedgerows and food forests in Irish and UK gardens.

Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; Elder tolerates a wide range of soil types, including occasional wetness. Water well while young plants establish. Prune regularly, cutting back hard in winter if needed, to maintain shape and encourage healthy new growth for the best flower and berry crops. Pick flower heads in early summer for cordial and berries in late summer once fully dark, cooking berries thoroughly before use.
