Irish Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a native deciduous shrub or small tree, offered here as a young, well-rooted tree — supplied bare-root from November to March and as a potted tree the rest of the year. Fast-growing and multi-stemmed, it reaches up to 6 m and opens attractive yellow catkins in early spring, often before its leaves appear, giving bees an early source of pollen. Sweet, edible hazelnuts mature in late summer, loved by people and wildlife alike. Native to Ireland and responsive to coppicing, it's a traditional choice for hedgerows and woodland management, though it can spread gently by suckering and self-seeding if left unmanaged. A productive, ecologically valuable addition to hedgerows, agroforestry systems and food forests in Irish and UK gardens.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; Hazel tolerates heavier or slightly acidic ground well. Water well while young plants establish. It responds well to coppicing, which encourages vigorous new growth and can be used to manage size in hedgerows or agroforestry systems. Left unmanaged it can spread by suckering and self-seeding, so remove unwanted shoots if a single-stemmed form is preferred. Harvest hazelnuts in late summer once shells begin to turn brown.
