Turkish Hazel Tree
€19.95
The Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna) is a hardy, deciduous nut tree that typically grows to 10–15 metres tall, with a broad, pyramidal canopy and distinctive, rough-textured bark. In spring, it produces yellow catkins that provide an early source of pollen for bees and other pollinators. By late summer to early autumn, the tree produces small, edible hazelnuts encased in a hard shell, prized for snacking, baking, and preserves.
Turkish Hazel thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is exceptionally hardy, tolerant of wind, urban conditions, and a wide range of soils, making it well suited to Ireland’s cool temperate climate. The tree is long-lived, low-maintenance, and wildlife-friendly, providing shelter and food for birds and beneficial insects. Unlike common hazel, Turkish Hazel forms a single-trunked tree rather than a multi-stemmed shrub, making it ideal for avenues, orchards, or permaculture food forests.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, but once established, the tree is drought-tolerant. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and improve soil health.
Prune minimally, removing only dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain an open, healthy canopy. Hazelnuts are ready to harvest in late summer to early autumn when shells are fully brown and begin to fall naturally. Nuts can be eaten fresh, roasted, or used in cooking and baking, while the tree itself continues to provide long-term ecological and ornamental benefits.
