Damson (Prunus domestica subsp. insititia) is a hardy, small plum tree in the rose family, offered here as a young, well-rooted tree — supplied bare-root from November to March and as a potted tree the rest of the year. Compact and easy-going, it grows to 4 to 6 m and produces clusters of small, oval purple fruits with a rich, tangy flavour, excellent for cooking, jams, wines and chutneys. Self-fertile and tolerant of heavy clay and colder sites, it's a forgiving choice for beginner gardeners as well as established orchards. Its spring blossom also offers early forage for bees. A reliable, low-maintenance addition to edible gardens, orchards and food forests across Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil; Damson tolerates a range of conditions, including heavy clay and colder climates, once established. Water well during the first year while roots establish. Self-fertile and low-maintenance, it needs little routine care — prune in late summer if needed to maintain shape and airflow. Fallen fruit can self-seed or attract wildlife, so gather windfalls promptly if this isn't wanted. Harvest in late summer for jams, chutneys or wine.
