Pomegranate
€14.95
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a hardy, ornamental fruiting shrub or small tree that typically reaches 2–4 m tall, though it can be kept smaller with pruning or grown in a large container. It produces glossy green leaves, attractive orange-red flowers in summer, and, in warm sheltered conditions, rounded fruits filled with jewel-like edible seeds surrounded by sweet-tart juice. The seeds and juice can be used fresh in salads, desserts, sauces, marinades, drinks, syrups, molasses, and savoury dishes. Pomegranate is best suited to slightly more experienced gardeners in Ireland, providing striking flowers, Mediterranean character, edible fruit potential, and excellent ornamental value in sheltered gardens, sunny courtyards, conservatories, greenhouses, and permaculture plantings.
Pomegranate thrives in full sun and prefers warm, free-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is reasonably hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate in mild, sheltered locations, but young plants benefit from winter protection, and reliable fruiting usually requires a warm wall, polytunnel, greenhouse, or very favourable microclimate. Its drought tolerance once established, long flowering season, edible seeds, and strong ornamental appeal make it a valuable choice for adventurous edible landscapes and climate-resilient food growing.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter, choosing the warmest and most sheltered position available, ideally against a south-facing wall or in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing young plants or when growing in containers, and apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and nourish the soil.
Protect young plants from hard frost, cold winds, and winter waterlogging, particularly during their first few years. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded growth and to maintain an open, productive shape. Its vivid flowers, edible ruby-red seeds, drought tolerance, and ornamental form make it perfect for sunny sheltered gardens, courtyards, container growing, greenhouses, polytunnels, and permaculture systems exploring warm-climate perennial fruits in cool temperate regions.
