The Stone Pine (Pinus pinea), commonly known as the Pine Nut Tree, is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer that typically reaches 10–12 metres tall, with a distinctive umbrella-shaped canopy at maturity. It produces edible pine nuts, enclosed in large cones that take 3–5 years to mature. In summer, its dense foliage provides shelter for wildlife and adds ornamental value to gardens and food forests.

Stone Pine thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and performs well in mild climates, though in Ireland’s cooler temperate climate, sheltered sites are recommended for optimal growth. The tree is highly resistant to pests and diseases and is valued for both its edible seeds and its architectural, wildlife-friendly presence in permaculture gardens and food forests. Stone Pine is wind-tolerant and attracts birds and beneficial insects.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first few years after planting to establish a strong root system, particularly in dry periods. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould around the base to retain moisture and support soil health.

Pruning is generally minimal; remove dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain shape and airflow. Cones take several years to mature—harvest pine nuts in late summer or autumn when cones turn brown and open naturally. Stone Pine grows slowly but is long-lived, providing both edible seeds and ecological value for decades.
