Medlar tree -Westerveld
€26.95
The Medlar Tree ‘Westerveld’ (Mespilus germanica ‘Westerveld’) is a small, deciduous fruit tree that typically grows to 3–5 metres tall, forming a compact, rounded canopy. It produces creamy-white flowers in late spring, which are followed by distinctive brown, apple-shaped fruits in autumn. The fruits require a process called “bletting” (softening after harvest) to develop their sweet, spiced flavour, making them ideal for jams, jellies, and desserts.
This medlar variety is fully hardy and thrives in full sun with well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is well suited to Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates wind and less-than-perfect soil conditions once established. Its spring blossoms attract bees and pollinators, while its fruits provide a late-season food source for wildlife. ‘Westerveld’ is partially self-fertile but will produce a better crop if another medlar tree is planted nearby.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during the first year and during dry spells to support strong establishment. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to feed the soil and retain moisture. Stake young trees if needed to support the canopy.
Prune in winter to remove dead, crossing, or crowded branches and to maintain an open, airy structure for good airflow and fruiting. Harvest fruits in late autumn once they are fully coloured. Store them in a cool, dry place until bletting occurs (fruit softens and sweetens), then enjoy fresh, in preserves, or baked desserts.
