Wild Service Tree

The Wild Service Tree (Sorbus torminalis) is a rare, deciduous native tree that typically grows to 10–15 metres tall, forming a broad, rounded canopy with distinctive lobed leaves. In late spring, it produces clusters of creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By autumn, small brownish fruits known as “chequers” develop, traditionally harvested after bletting (softening) to improve their flavour. The foliage turns rich shades of red, orange, and bronze in autumn, making it one of the most striking native trees for seasonal colour.

Wild Service thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, including chalky or limestone soils. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a range of conditions once established. As a native species, it plays an important ecological role in supporting biodiversity, providing nectar for pollinators and fruit for birds and wildlife. It is well suited to larger gardens, rewilding projects, native woodland planting, and permaculture systems seeking to increase diversity and resilience.

⚠️ Note: The fruits are traditionally eaten only after bletting and are not typically consumed raw straight from the tree.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year after planting to establish strong roots, particularly during dry periods. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and improve soil structure.

Prune minimally in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain a healthy structure. Harvest fruits in autumn once fully developed and allow them to blet (soften) before use. Wild Service is low-maintenance once established and will provide long-term ecological, ornamental, and biodiversity benefits.
