Red-veined sorrel

Price

€6.95

Red Veined Sorrel (Rumex sanguineus) is a hardy perennial leafy herb known for its striking green leaves marked with deep crimson veins. Growing to around 30–40 cm in height, it forms compact clumps that bring both colour and texture to edible gardens. The tender young leaves have a fresh, lemony flavour and can be harvested regularly for salads, garnishes, and light cooking. Its ornamental appearance makes it equally suited to kitchen gardens, herb beds, and decorative borders.

In summer, the plant produces slender flower spikes that attract pollinators if left to develop. As a reliable perennial, Red Veined Sorrel returns each year and provides a steady harvest of fresh greens with very little maintenance, making it an excellent addition to food forests and permaculture plantings.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to encourage continuous leaf production. Apply a mulch of compost or mulch each spring to maintain soil fertility and retain soil moisture.

Harvest leaves regularly to promote fresh new growth and prevent the plant from becoming tough. Flower stalks can be removed to extend the harvest period if desired. Red Veined Sorrel can be propagated easily by dividing established clumps in spring or autumn.

Red Veined Sorrel thrives in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and performs well in vegetable beds, raised beds, and edible borders. As a hardy perennial herb, it provides a reliable supply of nutrient-rich leaves while also contributing ornamental value to the garden.
