Rudbeckia, commonly known as Coneflower or Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia spp.), is a hardy, perennial flowering plant that typically grows 60–120 cm tall, forming upright clumps of green foliage. From midsummer to early autumn, it produces striking, daisy-like flowers with golden-yellow petals and a dark central cone, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Rudbeckia is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance plant that adds long-lasting colour to borders, meadows, pollinator gardens, and permaculture plantings.

Rudbeckia thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and tolerates a variety of soils, including clay or sandy conditions once established. This robust perennial is ideal for creating vibrant, wildlife-friendly gardens that support biodiversity and provide continuous floral resources throughout the summer months.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water regularly during the first few weeks to establish roots, and during prolonged dry periods thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain soil moisture and improve soil fertility.

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage extended blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding if not desired. Rudbeckia will return year after year, forming clumps that can be divided every 3–4 years to maintain plant health and vigour. Its long flowering period, ease of growth, and pollinator-friendly nature make it an excellent addition to wildlife gardens, meadows, and permaculture systems.
