Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a hardy, deciduous shrub that typically grows 2–4 metres tall, forming a dense, rounded canopy. In late spring, it produces fragrant, silvery-yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. By late summer to autumn, it develops small, red to orange berries that are edible, rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, and excellent for jams, jellies, syrups, or fresh eating.

Autumn Olive is a nitrogen-fixing plant, naturally enriching the soil and improving fertility for surrounding plants—making it highly valuable in permaculture gardens, food forests, and hedgerows. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerates poor soils, and is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate. Its dense growth also provides shelter for birds and beneficial insects, supporting biodiversity and wildlife-friendly planting.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil, enriched with compost or organic matter if available. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, and during dry periods thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches, and to maintain airflow and shape. Harvest berries in late summer to autumn when fully ripe and red. Use fresh, in preserves, jams, or syrups, or leave some for wildlife. As a nitrogen-fixing shrub, Autumn Olive will continue to enhance soil fertility and provide ecological benefits for years to come.
