The Brown Turkey Fig (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’) is a deciduous fruit tree that typically grows 3–5 metres tall, forming a spreading canopy with large, deeply lobed leaves. It produces sweet, medium-sized, brownish-purple fruits from late summer to early autumn, ideal for eating fresh, drying, or making preserves. This variety is well-suited to cooler temperate climates and is known for being reliable, productive, and relatively easy to grow. Its dense foliage also provides shelter for beneficial insects and wildlife.
Brown Turkey Fig thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate, especially when planted in a sheltered, sunny spot, such as against a south-facing wall or in a courtyard. The tree is self-fertile but will benefit from good airflow and regular watering during dry periods to ensure a healthy crop.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system and during dry spells thereafter. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and to maintain an open, airy shape. Harvest figs from late summer to early autumn when fully coloured, slightly soft, and sweet. Brown Turkey Fig trees are low-maintenance, long-lived, and will provide abundant fruit for many years with proper care.
