Sessile Oak

Price

€9.95

Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) is offered here as a bare-root tree from November to March, and as a potted tree the rest of the year. A majestic native deciduous tree, it can reach 20 to 40 m with a broad, rounded canopy of deeply lobed leaves that turn yellow and brown in autumn. Yellow-green catkins in spring provide vital early pollen, and mature trees support hundreds of species of insects, birds, and fungi, making Sessile Oak one of Europe's most ecologically valuable trees. Long-lived and low-maintenance once established, it's a cornerstone species for Irish and UK woodlands, food forests, and rewilding projects.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun or partial shade in deep, fertile, well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic. Water well through the first growing season to establish a strong root system, and mulch each spring with compost or leaf mould. Prune only when necessary, removing dead or crossing branches in late winter. Acorns mature in autumn and can be left to germinate naturally or collected for propagation.
