Sessile oak

Price

€9.95

The Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) is a majestic native deciduous tree that can reach 20–40 metres in height, developing a broad, rounded canopy as it matures. Its deeply lobed green leaves turn warm shades of yellow and brown in autumn before falling. In spring, the tree produces yellow-green catkins that provide an important early pollen source for insects. Sessile Oak supports a remarkable range of wildlife, hosting hundreds of species of insects, birds, and fungi, making it one of the most ecologically valuable trees in Europe.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in deep, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. While tolerant of a range of soils, Sessile Oak prefers slightly acidic conditions and performs well in upland or free-draining locations. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Apply a mulch of compost, leaf mould, or wood chips each spring to retain soil moisture and encourage healthy soil life.

Growing Instructions

Prune only when necessary, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter while the tree is dormant. Sessile Oak generally requires little maintenance once established and grows steadily into a strong long-lived tree. Acorns mature in autumn and can be left to germinate naturally or collected for propagation.

Sessile Oak is exceptionally hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and thrives in open landscapes, woodlands, and agroforestry systems. Its long lifespan and vast ecological relationships make it a cornerstone species for food forests, wildlife habitats, and rewilding projects. Mature trees provide shelter, nesting sites, and a reliable food source for birds, mammals, and countless beneficial insects.
