Black Poplar tree
€9.95
The Black Poplar (Populus nigra) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that typically reaches 15–20 metres tall, with a broad, spreading canopy. It produces small, yellow-green catkins in early spring, providing an early source of pollen for bees and other pollinators. Known for its tall, stately form and textured bark, Black Poplar is one of Europe’s rare native trees and plays an important ecological role in wetland and riparian habitats.
Black Poplar thrives in full sun and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil, though it tolerates seasonal flooding and heavier soils once established. It is hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate and provides excellent shelter and nesting sites for birds and other wildlife. Its rapid growth and large canopy make it a valuable addition to food forests, wildlife corridors, or permaculture plantings, while also contributing to biodiversity and carbon capture.

Growing Instructions
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, particularly during dry periods. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and support soil health.
Prune minimally, removing dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain tree health and structure. Black Poplar grows rapidly and can be coppiced if desired for wood or biomass. Its seeds mature in spring; leave some to naturalize in suitable wet areas to support local biodiversity.
