Hops

Price

€14.95

Hops (Humulus lupulus) is a vigorous, herbaceous perennial climber that can grow 4–6 metres tall each season, producing long, twining bines that quickly cover trellises, fences, or pergolas. In late summer, female plants develop aromatic green cones, traditionally used in brewing, herbal preparations, and natural remedies. The cones also have a pleasant fragrance and can be dried for decorative or practical use.

Hops thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is fully hardy in Ireland’s cool temperate climate, dying back to the ground each winter and regrowing strongly in spring. Its dense foliage provides shelter for beneficial insects, while its flowers support pollinators. Hops is ideal for vertical growing in permaculture systems, food forests, and productive gardens where space efficiency is valued.

Growing Instructions

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Provide strong vertical support such as a trellis, wire system, or pergola for the bines to climb. Water regularly during the first growing season and during prolonged dry spells to encourage vigorous growth. Apply a mulch of compost each spring to retain moisture and feed the soil.

Cut back dead growth to ground level in late autumn or winter once the plant has died back. Harvest cones in late summer when they feel papery and aromatic. Dry thoroughly before storage or use. Hops will return each spring, producing strong new growth and abundant cones once established.
