Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is offered here as a small potted plant, a hardy, aromatic perennial in the daisy family that grows tall and upright, reaching 1.5 to 2m, with deeply lobed, silvery-green leaves and tall spikes of small brownish flowers in late summer. Widely naturalised across Europe, it has a long history of traditional use as a culinary bittering herb and in folk herbalism, traditionally taken as a digestive bitter and burned or brewed as a traditional aid to sleep — though as the plant contains thujone, modern guidance generally advises against regular internal use in any quantity, or during pregnancy. Today it earns its place mainly for its architectural foliage and habitat value, attracting beneficial insects and providing cover in wilder corners of the garden. Vigorous and unfussy, Mugwort suits wildlife gardens, herb collections and low-maintenance borders in Ireland and the UK.

Growing Instructions
Grow in full sun in well-drained soil; Mugwort tolerates poor, dry or disturbed ground with ease. It spreads by both rhizomes and self-sown seed, so plant it where it has room to roam, or dig out unwanted growth to keep it in check. Cut back hard in late summer to control height and refresh growth. Little else is needed — this is a genuinely low-maintenance, resilient herb.
