Nasturtium seeds

€2.95

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)(approx. 15 seeds per packet) is a vibrant, easy-to-grow annual beloved for its edible flowers, peppery leaves, and ability to attract pollinators. Native to South America and long naturalised in cottage gardens across Ireland, it forms trailing or bushy plants 20–200 cm long, producing an abundance of warm-toned blooms in shades of orange, red, and yellow from early summer to the first frosts. Every part of the plant is edible — the flowers and leaves add a peppery zest to salads, while the young green seed pods can be pickled as “poor man’s capers.”

Nasturtium thrives in full sun and poor to moderately fertile soil, flowering more freely when not overfed. It’s drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for containers, borders, hanging baskets, and edible landscapes. It’s also an excellent companion plant — deterring pests such as aphids and serving as a trap crop to protect more delicate vegetables.

⚠️ Note: Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, but the seeds and pods should only be eaten when immature and pickled — mature seeds can cause stomach upset if consumed raw.

Sowing instructions

Seeds are large, round, and easy to handle. Sow directly outdoors from April to June, 1–2 cm deep, or start indoors in March for earlier blooms. Space plants 30–40 cm apart. Water regularly in dry weather, but avoid over-fertilising to maintain abundant flowering. Store seeds cool and dry until sowing.

⚠️ Note: Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, but the seeds and pods should only be eaten when immature and pickled — mature seeds can cause stomach upset if consumed raw.
